Awkward elevators

This week we dedicated our group meeting for thinking about a space in which communication needs improvement. According to the brief, we focused in a space shared by people who know each other. We thought about elevators. Whether on office or apartment building, all of us in the group have experienced the awkwardness in an elevator. When we go up the elevator, in our office or home, we usually know the people who share the elevator with is, but still avoid conversation and eye contact, trying to look busy: looking at the watch, the smartphone in the hand, the numbers going up, our reflection in the mirror or just standing facing forward. We think it is generally to avoid the awkwardness of having an eye contact with different people who you know or are acquaintances.
That is, the way we see it, a valid need and a problem need to be solved. We have decided to focus on elevators in an office, since there is usually more traffic than an apartment building elevator, and people usually take the elevator with others.
Our goal is to "break the ice" on elevator rides, thinking that this will eventually lead to better relationships between workers at the office and improve the atmosphere in the working environment.
We thought about a way to make people communicate in the elevator, without forcing them to invest too much attention or energy. Another challenge is the short time people spend in an elevator, in which we want to create communication.
We thought about a display on the elevator walls, that will react to people voice and therefore encourage them to talk and give them a common thing to talk about. That way the elevator will be used as an "Social object", for its ability to spark conversation.
